Digitek Alert: Defective Pills Could Cause Serious Side Effects, Death

Digitek or “digoxin” is used to treat congestive heart failure or abnormal heart
rhythms. A manufacturing defect has exposed hundreds or thousands of patients to

The problem began when the manufacturer, Actavis Totowa, apparently made Digitek
tablets for an unknown period of time with twice their normal thickness. That
defect exposed consumers to twice the approved level of Digitalis, the active
ingredient in Digitek.
Those double-strength pills create the risk of Digitalis toxicity, which can
cause a variety of serious, possibly fatal, health conditions. Among them: heart
attack, stroke, kidney failure, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, low blood pressure
and an unstable or slow heart rate.
In April 2008, the manufacturer
initiated a Class I nationwide recall. The recalled tablets were distributed by Mylan Pharmaceuticals, Inc. with a Bertek label or by UDL Laboratories, Inc.
with a UDL label.
Elderly patients and patients with weak kidneys face the greatest
risk of death from Digitalis toxicity. Patients who took a lethal dose of
Digitalis may have exhibited multiple symptoms, including nausea, vomiting,
diarrhea, loss of appetite, confusion, heart palpitations, irregular heartbeat,
halos or rings of light around objects, and blind spots or blurred vision.
Other symptoms include: decreased urine output, excessive
nighttime urination, fainting, swelling and difficulty breathing when lying
down.
